What is NPDP?
July 3, 2017
MADE specializes in New Product Development Process (NPDP), and applies a special form of it to every product engagement. But what is it?
Our take on NPDP can be summarized in five steps:
- Discovery
A "fuzzy" analysis of what the product will solve or otherwise do, and what other solutions exist in the marketplace, ultimately trying to answer the question, "Does this need to exist?" - Design
A more technical definition of how the product will work, and most importantly how people are intended to use it - Implementation
Actually making prototypes and proofs of concept, drawing on all prior phases and revisiting each to make sure the product still meets its definitions - Commercialization
The complex task of going into production and staging a go-to-market - Product maturity lifecycle
The continuous (and often selective) improvement of the product, including revisiting all prior steps
One of the largest dangers to client projects emerges when a step is skipped, or deemed "full enough" to proceed without full diligence. Established companies often come to us with work done in steps 1 to 3, and look to MADE to help commercialize (4) or fix otherwise nontrivial problems that are preventing the product from success (5).
No matter which stage you're at, approaching your product with our unique flavor of NPDP yields significant benefit. Our goal is for your product to take on a life of its own and become a deeper part of your customers' lives - a goal that is worth not cutting corners.
